Solomon Munyo Mutai has won Uganda’s first medal at the fifteenth edition of the IAAF World Athletics Championships in Beijing, China.

The 22 year old Mutai who has made his first podium finish at a world event recorded 2 hours, 13 minutes and 30 seconds to win the Bronze medal.

Eritrea’s little-known Ghirmay Ghebreslassie claimed gold in 2:12:28 and became the youngest athlete to win a road race at the World Championships. This was the 19 year’s old first Marathon honour and also the country’s first medal at the world championships since 2009.

Ethiopia’s Yamane Tsegay took home silver after recording a season best 2:13:08.

Meanwhile defending champion, Steven Kiprotich came as close as second after 30km but finished sixth with 2 minutes and 15 seconds off the mark. The Olympic and former World Champion recorded 2 hours, 14 minutes and 43 seconds.

Jackson Kiprop finished 10th with 2:15:16 while Abraham Kiplimo did not finish

Moscow’s Silver medalist, Lilisa Desisa finished seventh behind Kiprotich with 2:14:54.
