Plans for the first ever African Universities football championship have been finalized, Kawowo Sports reliably reports.
The development was confirmed by the Association of Uganda University Sports (AUUS) general secretary, Patrick Ssebuliba on Wednesday during a press conference held at Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala.
Sebuliba ‘let the cat out of the bag’ for one of AUUS’ best kept secrets after successful negotiations between the Ugandan universities sports body, the sponsor (not yet named) and the Association of African Sports Universities Federation (AASUF).
Initially, we are planning a four nation football tournament for Universities in Africa but the dream to expand is alive. At the moment, all the negotiations with the sponsor have been finalized. This was after the success of the University football league that is being played for the fourth year now”
Four Countries:
Already, South Africa, Zambia, Namibia and Uganda have been confirmed to take part in the event that will be played on home and away basis.
Without revealing the sponsor, Sebuliba elucidated that a team of experts is set to visit Uganda in October to visit the playing facilities and finalize on other logistical issues with the universities.
“We expect a team of technocrats next month. We are targeting university facilities up to standard because we plan this tournament to be held within the confines of the universities so that they also get the due mileage” he added.
This will be first ever Universities football league on the entire African continent.
