Ugandans Fred Musobo and Stella Chesang both won Gold medals in the senior men’s and women’s titles at the 31st WMRA World Mountain Running Championships in the Welsh town of Betws-y-Coed on Saturday.

Fred Musubo triumphed in 49:00 over the 13km course while countryman Stella Chesang won the senior women’s race, which was 8.9km in 37:52.

Musubo looked comfortable over a three-lap13km on the undulating course. Italy’s Bernard Dematteis grabbed the lead during the opening stages of the race in the first lap, but Musobo later took the lead around five kilometres into the race and it remained so till the end.

Italy’s Bernard Dematteis finally got his hands on a medal, Silver after battling Uganda’s Joshua Mangusho earlier on. Another Ugandan, Isaac Kiprop, had a disappointing run as he finished in 20th position.

Ugandan teenager Stella Chesang was on fire in the women’s category, claiming top spot ahead of British athletes Emmie Collinge, Emma Clayton and Sarah Tunstallwho  finished second, third and fourth respectively.

Chesang won by 31 seconds after securing the lead from the start by the top of the climb on the first lap, three kilometres into the race.

Italy won the senior men’s team competition, ahead of Uganda and Great Britain while Turkey won the junior men’s with USA second and GB third. Czech Republic came out winners in the junior women’s team title.
