2015 Rwabushenyi Chess Tournament:

A strong field of at least 200 players (male and female) are expected at the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) funded Rwabushenyi memorial chess tournament due to commence this weekend at Hotel Africana in Kampala.
Unlike the previous editions that have been held in January, this year’s tournament comes as an early Christmas gift to the hundreds of chess thirsty players and followers alike.
The event has been designed to correspond with the international aviation week celebrations as the president Uganda Chess Federation (UCF) attests;
The sponsors, CAA are delighted to have the event being part of the Aviation Week activities. The Intenational Civil Aviation Week is globally celebrated every year from 1 – 7 December.
Like the norm has been for the past five editions, once again, CAA has bankrolled the Uganda Chess Federation biggest event with a package of ten million six hundred thousand shillings (10,600,000/=).
The highly competitive Championship is to be held over two consecutive weekends from Saturday 5th – Sunday 6th and Saturday 12th – Sunday 13th December 2015.

Olympiad Qualifiers:
The event is also doubling as the first phase of the Olympiad Qualifiers for Ugandan players with the top 30 male participants from this event due to be selected to proceed to the second phase of the Qualifiers due to be held next year.
The number of ladies proceeding to the next phase will depend on the total number of ladies registered but will be communicated to the players before the start of the event.

CAA is supporting this biggest local event on the Uganda Chess Federation calendar in memory of the Authority’s former Director Airports, the late Cyril Rwabushenyi who was also a long serving Chairman and one of the founder members of the Uganda Chess Federation.
UCF’s Vice President, Robina Namwanje expressed gratitude for the support from CAA which was confirmed this week and noted;
CAA has consistently demonstrated loyalty in supporting the sport in memory of the late Rwabushenyi who did a lot for Chess and aviation in Uganda.” She promised that the Federation would put the sponsorship package to good use by presenting a quality event in line with FIDE standards and conditions.
About 200 players including those from neighboring countries are expected.
Also school children in holidays are expected to participate in the event that is going to be FIDE rated in the Open and Ladies Categories.
