The 16th Inter-University games will go down in the history of the institutional championships for having ushered on board a new sport on the ever swelling list of events.
The excitement among officials, fans, players and the local organizing committee was obviously evident as the first games on the sand kicked off on Friday.
Vice Chairman of the local organizing committee, Job Mwegombi lauded all the stake holders for the effort of having the beach soccer facility, put in place;
We thank every part that played a role to see the first off the lake beach soccer facility put in place.
We are particularly in-debited to Uganda Beach Soccer Association (UBSA) for the technical advise when the pitch was being planned.
The management of Busoga University takes special praise for providing the land and resources
For starters, Uganda had only two beach soccer playing facilities – at Lido and Sports beach in Entebbe along the shores of Lake Victoria.
In some of the opening results, St Lawrence overcame Kabale 2-1, YMCA whipped IUIU 6-2, Kabale were 2-1 winners on spot kicks over KIU after normal time had ended 3 all; and St Lawrence humiliated IUIU 9-3.
One of the players, Geofrey Akabwai of KIU attested to the great ambiance at the facility;
The pitch situation is great and it feels good having more than two playing beach soccer grounds in the country.
The entire cost of beach soccer pitch in Busoga is estimated at least Ug.shs 100M.
