The 5th and 6th rounds of the Olympiad 2016 qualifiers second phase open ended on Tuesday 27th with a shocking and an interesting table leader.

Unseeded lad Edgar Ntende defied all odds to lead the table with 5.0 points from 6 rounds played so far.

International Master Arthur Segwanyi who’s also seeded number one in the country shocked Chess lovers with his slow start but as expected, bettered his chances of qualifying for the next phase when he out thought his opponents to win both the 5th and the 6th round. The two victories moved him from 12th to 5th in the table.

His slow start had earlier earned him only 2.0 points after winning only one round of the four played over the weekend.

Walter Okas who’s been out of action for sometime and also recently returned to the country from Sudan subjected the only international Master in these qualifiers to a shocking defeat in the 3rd round.

The other International Master Emojong is not part of the competitors and therefore won’t represent the country in Baku.

Fide master Harold Wanyama is placed 6th in the table with 4.0 points from 6 rounds.

Candidate Masters, Bob Bibasa and Haruna Nsubuga might have to up their game if they’re to qualify for the next phase as it’ll be contested by only the top twelve players. The pair is placed 13th and 18th respectively with both having witnessed 3 defeats already.

Action resumes this weekend with the final two rounds of the second phase.

The first twelve will proceed to the next phase. It’s from the third phase that the top 5 will be determined and they will represent the country in Baku come September.
