Hardly seven days since his previous engagement, newly crowned FM, Haruna Nsubuga returns to action on Saturday, May 7.
After attaining his new title from Dar es Salaam in the Zone 4.2 Africa Chess Championship, the rated 2105 flew straight to Kenya for the Nairobi International Open Chess championship.
The event that is only contested by chess players rated below 2200 gets underway at Makini school, Nairobi and Nsubuga believes he’s fully prepared for the tournament now with Harold Wanyama as his part time coach.
“I’m ready for the tournament and I feel confident” he said. “I have Harold (Wanyama) as my coach and I believe I’m ready to win it” he added.
Apart from the international exposure that comes by participating in such tournaments, Nsubuga knows just how important winning the event is to him.
“First of all, winning it improves my rating. It also has some good cash in it as prize money”
But for that to happen, he must first negotiate his way past the strong opponents he may face. He is most likely to face Kenya’s CM Ben Magana, and his fellow countrymen Allan Mathias Ssonko and the National team’s coach Bob Bibasa.
Nsubuga inclusive, the event attracted six Ugandans. Three in the Open category and three in the ladies.
The ladies include Goretti Angolikin, Ivy Claire Amoko and Shakira Ampaire.
On top of receiving a trophy, the winner in the Open category walks away with KShs50,000 while KShs30,000 goes to the top lady .
