Uganda Cranes’ first choice goalkeeper Denis Onyango was playing for Ethiopia’s St George in the 2005 CECAFA Kagame Cup in Tanzania when then Supersport manager, Pitso Mosimane first saw him and decided to sign him.

The two were separated in 2007 only to be reunited at Mamelodi Sundowns in 2012, a reunion that has gone on to deliver Mamelodi’s seventh league title.

Onyango was also named the best goalkeeper after the 2015/2016 Premier Soccer League for the first time in his decade stay in South Africa.

And much as Onyango has taken tremendous strides in developing his game, Mosimane believes Onyango has also done a remarkable job to make Uganda Cranes one of the best sides on the continent.

He has had a fantastic season, look where he has put Uganda, they are where they are because of him, he has breathed new life in that team, they are no longer pushovers on the continent, and they even go away and win matches.

Mosimane said this while appearing on the weekly football show Soccer Africa on South African television Supersport before he reminded the panelist about his first impression of the former SC Villa goalkeeper.

I first saw him in a COSAFA (meaning CECAFA) Club Competition some time back, I saw this big tall good goalkeeper, a shot stopper, a bit rowdy and clumsy, he lacked technique but I knew I can make him a good goalkeeper and that’s what he has turned out to be, a top class player

Apart from Sundowns and Supersport, Onyango has also been at Mpumalanga Black Aces and Bidvest Wits, but early in 2015, Mosimane gave him a new deal and the results have been positive.

When I went to Sundowns, I asked where Onyango is they told me he is at Wits and he was sitting on the bench, I told him come and play, because I knew the kind of player he was and what he was bringing on the table.

Onyango and Sundowns are in the group stages of the CAF Champions League and are pooled in Group B alongside Enyimba (Nigeria), Zamalek (Egypt) and ES Sétif (Algeria)

Onyango is currently with the Cranes in a do or die 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Botswana this Saturday.
