DR Congo celebrate qualifying for the World Cup 2026 Credit: FIFA

It was celebrations and joy as the Democratic Republic of Congo National Football Team made a heroic return to the country on Sunday after securing their slot to the 2026 FIFA World Cup earlier last week.

Steets of Kinshasa, the capital of DR Congo was filled with jubilant fans who cheered and waved to the Leopards for breaking a 52-year jinx of not playing at the global stage.

The team was hosted treated to a function at the People’s Palace by President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Félix Tshisekedi.

According to reports, Tshisekedi handed over brand new Jeep Cars to each of the members of the contingent (both players and coaches) and promised plots of land plus hefty bonus to the historic team.

To qualify for the World Cup, DR Congo edged Jamaica 1-0 in the inter-continental playoff courtesy of Axel Tuanzebe’s goal.

The team under the stewardship of Sebastian Desabre will play in Group K that has Portugal, Uzbekistan and Colombia.
