The first of its kind in Uganda. Probably that should be the talking point after KCCA players and officials took the streets to parade the 2015/2016 Uganda Premier League trophy.
Yes, maybe it should have come immediately after the team had been crowned league champions back in June, but all the same it has been done and a new chapter has not only been opened in the club’s history but Uganda’s football history as well.
Many have been saying the club should have hired one of those open buses used in the KCCA annual carnivals, but that’s not the point here.
Whether it was an open Fuso truck used, KCCA management and the team’s sponsors fulfilled their promise to take the trophy closer to the fans and in the process recruit new fans.
That’s what football is all about having that connection with your fans and making sure the numbers grow every now and then.
And parading the league trophy in different parts of Kampala will without a doubt bring people to the Philip Omondi Stadium.
Among the three top traditional teams in the country, KCCA have been taunted as the one with the least numbers of fans, but maybe the club has not been doing enough to reach out to its silent fans who are the majority.
Now it has started and the trophy parade is one of the many ways KCCA will use to make sure numbers in Lugogo grow bigger.
And the moment that is pulled off, then maybe all the criticism the club has been made to up with will turn into praises.
