The curtains have come down on the 2016 Kenya Premier League.

The new champions Tusker were crowned at the Nyayo stadium in style after beating outgoing champions, Gor Mahia 1-0.

Allan Wanga scored the only goal of the game midway the second half to take Paul Nkata coached side to 61 points, seven better than K’Ogalo after match day 30.

However, the only important factor at the Nyayo was crowning as the real battles were at Moi International stadium, Kasarani and Machakos were Ushuru and Sofapaka.

Ushuru go down

Heading into the game against Posta, Ushuru were a place above the relegation zone and all they needed was a draw as they led chasers Sofapaka by a three point margin.

Cavin Odongo put Posta in front inside nine minutes but six minutes later, Ebrima Sanneh equalised for Ushuru as the first half ended in a stalemate.

The second was a different story as Odongo completed his brace with on the hour mark after Dennis Mukaisi had given the hosts a 2-1 lead six minutes after the break.

The result left Ken Kenyatta’s side on 26 points and all they waited for was news from Machakos.

Ssimbwa in the stands as Sofapaka pummel Thika to survive

All they needed was a win and then pray that Ushuru falters. It did happen for the Batoto Bamungu as they came from a goal down to beat Thika 5-1 to survive the drop.

Soana coach Sam Ssimbwa, who is linked with a move to the side was in the stands as goals from Ezekiel Okare (2), Noah Abich, Moses Odhiambo and Victor Nyaberi own goal gave the side much needed relief.

Thika had two men sent off in a space of five minutes which eased the work of the hosts and despite a tie on 26 points with Ushuru, their better goal difference saw them survive.

Ssimbwa take charge?

There were reports that all Sam Ssimbwa awaited to put his signature on the dotted lines was survive and it remains to be seen whether that will happen.

“I am here for different reasons and return on Sunday,” he told Kawowo Sports.
