2016 Boxing Day Championship: 26th December

Less than three days to the long awaited 2016 Busoga Boxing day championship at Bugembe Stadium in Jinja, six more clubs have confirmed entry.
This brings the total number of clubs already set for the annual championship to 15.
Fishers boxing club (based at the Source of the Nile in Jinja), Mbale, Busia, Elgon Youth and two Kampala sides – Namugoona and Cobap are the latest teams that have expressed interest and duly confirmed to take part in the day long championship slated for boxing day.
According to coach Gilbert Mitala, one of the organizers for the tournament intended to act as a rehearsal for the February 2017 meet, the huge turn up is a great boost to the championship;
We are glad that more clubs have picked interest and we predict a great tournament as we prepare for the 9th – 11th February 2017 main event at the same venue.
The first 9 teams that had expressed interest in the event were; Bugiri Dragons, U.P.D.F, Kamuli Shockers, Iganga, Jinja, Bugembe, Mafubira, Busembatia and Mayuge boxing clubs.
Mitala adds that all the 10 weight categories will be available for the fighters.
Lightweight (48+ kg – 49kg), Fly (49+kg – 52kg), Bantam (52+kg – 56kg), Light Weight (56+kg – 60kg), Light Welter (60+kg – 64kg), Welter (64+kg – 69kg), Middle (69+kg – 75kg), Light Heavy (75+kg – 85kg) and Heavy (85+ – 90Kg).
Juniors (14-16 years), Youth (18-19) and Elite (19 – 30+) age groups will all compete in the boxing day championship that will also accommodate box sexes.
Some of the big names confirmed for the event are Kamada Odongo (Light weight), Brian Kivumbi (Light welter), David Kaggwa (Bantam), Johnson Bosingwa (Fly weight) and many others.
Reigning female Light Weight national champion Maureen Nabwiire will take part.
She will be accompanied by Jaliah Naali, Hellen Nabwiire and many other female boxers in the country.
Entry fees have been fixed at 3000/= and 10,000/= for the ordinary and VIP seats respectively.
Busoga Kingdom sports minister, Amin Bbosa Nkono is the chief guest.
