
Fide Master Patrick Kawuma finished atop in the Open Category at the Zone 4.2 African Individual Chess Championship Qualifiers that concluded on Sunday at Makerere University Business School.
Aside from his fellow FM Haruna Nsubuga who he drew against in the 4th round, Kawuma out-thought all his opponents to end the tournament unbeaten.
The No.4 seed in the region topped the section with 7.5 points.
Kawuma was closely followed by Nsubuga. The rated 2163 amassed 7 points to end the event as he started- second.
Despite losing to Nsubuga in the final round, Thomas Katairo snatched the 3rd position following his win over Michael Mawanda in the penultimate round. Katairo, like Joshua Katumba finished with 5.5 points, but came third on a tie-break
Katumba took the fourth position ahead of Allan Mathias Ssonko who drew all his last two games.
Ssonko on 5.5 points as well took the last spot in the Qualifiers.
In the Ladies’ section, Woman Fide Master [WFM] Ivy Clare Amoko accumulated 5.5 points. She won five and drew once to end the tourney with 5.5.

The above qualify for the Zone 4.2 African Individual Chess Championships due March in Ethiopia.
Uganda Chess Federation [UCF] will sponsor only the top player in each category meaning only Kawuma and Amoko will be catered for by the federation.
