Odongkara in action with the Uganda Cranes

Uganda Cranes and St George goalkeeper, Robert Odongkara surprised everyone, including himself as he easily shredded off a seemingly worrying knee injury in a record time.

The towering shot stopper limped off during his club’s home encounter against Tunisian side, Esperance in a CAF Champions League game that ended goal-less a few weeks ago.

He thus missed the subsequent matches against AS Vita and the closing part of the domestic league as well as the cup engagement on Tuesday against Defence that St George lost 3-1 in penalties.

In a quick twist of events and circumstances, Odongkara is match fit again after recovering from the injury.

The road to recovery has been a steady fast journey.

I thank my family, the St George management, medical team, my fellow players and the dear fans here (in Ethiopia) and back home in Uganda.

I resumed training some weeks ago and was match fit even against Defence although I was rested.

The timely news is a big boost for St George ahead of the visit of African champions, Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday.

Odongkara was in between the goal posts when St George worked out for a goal-less draw in South Africa during the first leg.

Uganda Cranes captain Dennis Onyango, the number one choice at Mamelodi Sundowns, will come face to face once again with two compatriots – Yassar Mugerwa and Odongkara, who has been goalkeeper of the year in Ethiopia for 5 successive seasons.

Both Mugerwa and Odongkara were key pillars towards St George’s 14th league success.

The game on Saturday will be handled by referees from Algeria.
