For the first time ever, Uganda will be represented at the Commonwealth Chess Championships.

Woman Fide Master Christine Namaganda will be the sole representative of the country when the 28th edition of the event that is contested for by players from the Commonwealth countries gets underway at Leela Ambience Convention Hotel in New Delhi, India on Sunday 2nd July.

The event allows each federation to enter seventeen players each under the categories of Open, Women, Senior [above 60], Junior Girls [U20, U18, U16, U14, U12, U10, U8] and Junior Open [U20, U18, U16, U14, U12, U10, U8], but due to financial predicaments, Uganda will have only one representative.

“It is a great feeling to be sole representative out there carrying the country’s flag,” Namaganda who becomes the first Ugandan to take part at the championships that were first held in Oxford in 1950, and whose participation was made possible by sponsorships from individuals said.

“I have to bring great results. I need this commonwealth medal to add onto what I have.” added a buoyant Namaganda.

The rated 1565 leaves for the tournament that will run for nine days this afternoon aboard Emirates Airlines.
