Uganda Cranes captain Dennis Onyango saved a penalty before Liberian center forward Anthony Laffor scored a late winner in Mamelodi Sundowns’ slim 1-0 win away to St George in Group C of the CAF Champions League at the Addis Ababa stadium.
The reigning African champions are now assured of a slot at the knock out stage.
In their other group game, Democratic Republic of Congo’s AS Vita and Esperance of Tunisia shared the spoils in a 4 goal thriller in Kinshasa.
Esperance now has 9 points from 5 matches played, with Sundowns on 8.
In Group A, Salim Jamal’s El Merreikh edged fellow Sudanese entity El Hilal 2-1 in a closely contested encounter played in Khartoum.
Ferroviario da Beira of Mozambique held Tunisia’s Etoile du Sahel to a one all draw.
Zimbabwe side CAPS United registered an emphatic 3-1 at home over Egyptian club El Zamalek in a CAF Champions League Group B match at the National stadium in Harare city.
Ronald Pfumbidzai gave the home team the lead on 31 minutes before Stanley Ohawuchi found the equalizer at the stroke of half time. Abbas Amidu’s double on 76 minutes and at the death of the match ensured that the reigning Zimbabwe league champions record a memorable victory at home.
In the same group match, Ahly Tripoli from Libya and Algeria’s USM Alger shared the spoils in a one all draw.
Morocco’s Wydad Athletic Club registered a well worked out 2-0 victory away to Coton Sport in the Cameroonian city of Garoua in Group D.
Zanaco from Zambia and Egyptian side Al Ahly shared the spoils in a non-scoring draw. Zanaco is now assured of a slot the quarter finals with 11 points.
