Ugandan chess players have been presented with a big-time opportunity to meliorate their FIDE ratings.
Come 12 August at the busy environs of Wandegeya, a rare tourney shall come to pass.
The tourney, dubbed The Chess Battle is a diverse event from the recently concluded Super Eight Rapid Chess Challenge that was hosted at the same venue as it shall be rated.
And disparate to the Super Eight, the battle, organized by Comrades Chess Club- its maiden senior event- shall be a contest among those rated below 2100.
Shadows of Grace Daniel Nsubuga, Simon Gonza, Allan Mathias Ssonko, FM Haruna Nsubuga, Edward Ssentongo, FM Harold Wanyama, FM Patrick Kawuma, IM Elijah Emojong and IM Arthur Ssegwanyi – the top nine players in the country shall only be visible as spectators and not as competitors as their ratings read above 2100.
But while the event will be open to the rest, only 20 slots are up for grabs, and these shall be given on a first come first serve basis.
Interested players ought to part with Ugx15,000 as entry fee.
To seize this opportunity, Rogers Ntambi commonly known as ‘Urs Truly’ and Ezekiel Matsiko alias ‘Ikemat34’, a loquacious yet a dauntless young man who has dared some of the best in the game have already paid.
And to help make it a success, MUBS’ Edwin Nuwamanya offered Ugx100,000 as financial support. Nuwamanya is one of the benefactors of the Ultimate Death Match, a challenge that was inspired by the success of the Terrian Chess Academy’s Ultimate Challenge between Mehul Gohil and Bryan Toboso in Kenya last month.
