The Uganda Athletics Federation has named the final Uganda team of 20 athletes to represent the country in the prestigious World Championships due August 5-13th 2017 in London.
The team of 20 entered camp on Monday and will see the long distance runners under Coach Gordon Ahimbisibwe camp in Kapchorwa while the middle distance runners will be handled by Rafael Kasajja in Kampala.
Former marathon Olympic and world champion Stephen Kiprotich and 2007 5000m bronze medalist Moses Kipsiro have officially opted out of the London 2017 World Championships citing inadequate preparedness for the championships.
Abu Mayanja hit the qualifying mark over the 800m at the climax of the national track and field championship last week.
He joins Ronald Musagala – 1500m, Jacob Araptany, Boniface Sikowo and Albert Chemutai in the 3000mSC, Stephen Kissa and Jacob Kiplimo in the 5000m, Joshua Cheptegei 5000m/10000m, Timothy Toroitich – 10,000m, Solomon Mutai, Robert Chemonges and Chesakit Alex who will run the Marathon.
In the ladies category, Halima Nakaayi, Winnie Nanyondo and Dorcus Ajok will feature in the 800m, Esther Chebet – 1500m, Peruth Chemutai – 3000mSC while Mercyline Chelangat and Stella Chesang will run the 5000m. Juliet Chekwel will run the 10000m.
The team will be coached by Gordon Ahimbisibwe and assisted by Guiseppe Giambrone.
The World Championships is the biggest athletics event with Uganda registering a record 27 qualifiers.
