Playing in their second season in the women’s top tier league coupled with off season business that saw them ship in the experience of Flavia Oketcho and Muhayimina Namuwaya, JKL Lady Dolphins are seen by many as the outsider to make the finals since A1 Challenge in 2010.

However, Boniface Okello’s charges have a lot of work to do if they are to challenge UCU Lady Canons (and KCCA Leopards) for the National Basketball League title this year.

Lady Dolphins stagnated in the fourth quarter as back-to-back champions Lady Canons wiped out a 21-point deficit to win 66-62 on Sunday afternoon at Lugogo Indoor Stadium.

UCU started the game strong with a 7-0 run but JKL quickly got back and led 16-13 after the first 10 minutes. JKL  were in ascendance through the second period offensively, and defensively solid limiting UCU to just 6 points.

Lady Canons seemed doomed in the game after the Lady Dolphins earned a 21-point lead just over midway the third quarter on Stella Oyera’s pair of throws. But Judith Nansobya (17 points) laid in and followed with a trey to spark UCU’s 17-8 run to close out the quarter trailing by 12 points.

Nick Natuhereza’s charges scored 7 un-answered points to start the fourth quarter and were within 5 points (45-50) just two minutes into the frame.

Jamila Nansikombi (12 points) stretched JKL’s lead to 9 with a couple of lay-ups but Nansobya twice connected from beyond the arc before and after Vilma Achieng’s close look to bring Lady Canons within a point (53-54).

The 2016 USPA Female Basketball Player of the Year sunk a free thrown before knocking down another three-ball to cap her stellar fourth quarter.

Zaina Lokwameri (17 points) drew Lady Canons at 59 with just under two minutes to play before Rosine Micomyiza (10 points) temporarily put the university side ahead.

Oyera (11 points) restored parity for JKL but Achieng and Lokwameri made sure Lady Canons escape with victory in the 28-point fourth quarter explosion.
