The Government of Uganda has promised to build capacity of sports tutors at tertiary institutions in order to enhance competition and improve quality of athletes at this level.

Speaking at the official opening of the 15th national nurses training institution games in Gulu, National Council of Sports (NCS) board member Zubair Galiwango who represented the state minister for sports, Charles Bakabulindi,

We realize there are a few technical aspects lacking in players at this level and thus the need to pursue that line especially if top tier clubs are to benefit

The week-long games started with track and field that despite lacking in depth of star athletes was lit up by Uganda institute of allied health and management Leonard Opinyi.

Opinyi missed out by a whisker to represent Uganda at last year’s Olympic Games and looked to have shaken that ‘ghost off’ with a mercurial 800-meter final show that left many at Pece stadium in awe.

A record 57 nurses training institutions are entered for these games that have added wood ball, mind games and handball to a rota that already had football, volleyball, netball and track and field.

Lira school of comprehensive nursing is defending champions having swept aside others at last year’s event held in Mbale.

The games continue on Tuesday through to Friday.
