Though they will not be playing at the quarter final stage of the 2017 FIBA Africa Champions Cup, ASB New Generation already have something to smile about.

The Democratic Republic of Congo club shocked one of the tournament heavy weights Association Sportive de Salé (who rested three of their stars) 89-80 on Friday in their last group game.

Jericho Samuna opened the scoring for New Generation (who had lost their previous four games and were playing pride) from downtown in a quarter they kept AS Salé in check but trailed by a couple at the end.

Christian Kabongo’s early 5 points in the second quarter put New Generation in the lead they never relinquished through out the frame closing out the half with a 42-33 lead.

On return from the locker rooms for the third quarter, Jonathan Maklin stuffed in a dunk to excend New Generation’s lead but Yacine Beri’s 3-pointer sparked a 25-12 run by AS Salé to take the lead with 2:28 to play.

AS Salé’s 34 points explosion in the third quarter put them in pole position for the win heading into the final quarter as they had a 3-point (67-64) advantage.

New Generation started the fourth quarter with a 6-0 run to take the lead and never trailed against as AS Salé’s offense collapsed and managed just 13 points in the quarter as the Congolese side went for 25.

Kabongo was AS Salé’s tormentor in chief. The forward poured in game high 25 points and was completed by Emmanuel Isungu (15 points), Macklin (15 points) and Kasongo Kasasa (12 points).

AS Salé who rested their star players Abderrahamane Najah, Wayne Arnold and Abdelhakim Zouita were led led by Munanga Shamba who scored 18 points and dropped 8 dimes, Hamza Jaddi added 17 points while Yassine El Mahsini and Yacine Baeri chipped in with 12 and 10 points respectively.
