The near future for Uganda national sevens side is bleak if the just concluded HSBC World Rugby Series qualifiers in Hong Kong is anything to go by.

After a dismal performance at the World Series qualifiers over the weekend in which they won two and lost as many, Tolbert Onyango’s men head to Australia for the Gold Coast Sevens.

The Michael Okorach led team will battle Fiji, Wales and Sri Lanka in Group D on Saturday for a solitary ticket to the semifinals.

It gets no tougher for the national sevens side than going up against Olympic gold medalists Fiji and a very good sevens side in Wales.

The side struggled to pass during the Hong Kong Sevens and rather relied on the individual brilliance of Philip Wokorach and Solomon Okia.

While it’s highly unlikely that Uganda will progress to the medal rounds, the two-day event will give Onyango another opportunity of looking at his charges in a competitive setting ahead of the Sevens World Cup in three months time.
