South African Barbarians edged Uganda Rugby Cranes in a friendly game played at Legends on Saturday.

The Rugby Cranes XVs side is preparing for the upcoming international season in which they will compete in the Africa Gold Cup with the opening to be played on June 17 against Namibia at Hage Geingob Stadium in Windhoek on June 16.

Constant Beckerling put the Supa Babas in the lead with the first try of the game that Kurt Webster failed to convert.

Ian Munyani responded for the hosts and James Ijongat put the conversion wide.

Man of the match Ita Mpete put the visitor in the lead with Babas’ second try and this time, Webster successfully converted.

Kobs captain Brian Asaba scored Uganda’s second try and Ivan Kirabo added the extras.

Supa Babas gained possession and quickly went into attack and Uganda could not hold their defense with Webster getting it over the try line. He converted his own try for the Barbarians to lead 19-12 at halftime.

Kirabo missed a penalty at the start of the second half before Ita Mpete extended the Barbarians lead to 24-12.

Cranes skipper Asuman Mugerwa forced it over the line and Kirabo cut the deficit to five points with a conversion but Mikle Webster made sure Robert Seguya’s men are far behind.

Eric Mula found Ian Munyani with a chip and the Kobs back crossed the white chalk. Clubmate James Ijongat added the extra point to bring the national side with in five again.

When Webster extended the lead for the visitors, the local side could not recover.

The two sides will meet again on on Monday, April 29 at Kyadondo.
