Record Caf Champions League winners Al Ahly took a big step towards yet another title with a 3-1 win against Esperance of Tunisia in Alexandria.

The game was decided by two VAR penalties, all converted by experienced Walid Soliman in a game in which the new technology was first used in the competition.

The two penalties came between Amr Eslsolia strike while the consolation for the Tunisian side was scored by Youcef Belaili who also converted a penalty.

The two sides had earlier met at the group stages with the game in Egypt ending in a goalless draw.

The second leg takes place at Stade Olympique in Rades on 9 November with the Tunisian side seeking to overturn a deficit to deny Al Ahly a ninth title.
