Simba Sports Club defeated fierce rivals Yanga 1-0 to win the highly charged and physical ‘Dar es Salaam derby’ at the National stadium on Saturday.

Ugandan born nationalized Rwandan, Meddie Kagere headed home the all-important goal on 71 minutes past Yanga goalkeeper Ramdahan Kabwili.

Kagere was well positioned to hummer home the header into the  back of the net off skipper John Raphael Bocco’s delivery off the right flank.

Earlier, Emmanuel Arnold Okwi would have scored the opener but had a shot from distance kiss the wood work in the 58th minute.

Referee Hans Mabena from Tanga issued five yellow cards (three to Yanga) in the well contested encounter.

This was the 102nd derby match between the two giant clubs in Tanzania since 1965.

Yanga still leads the contests between these two clubs with 36 wins, Simba now has 31 victories with 30 in stalemates in the league.

Despite the loss, Yanga is ahead of the table standings with 58 points from 24 matches.

Simba has played fewer games (16) and has 39 points.

Uganda Cranes stars Murushid Jjuuko and Okwi played for Simba.
