Uganda has so far registered nine athletes for the 2019 IAAF World Athletics Championships due September 27 to October 6, 2019 in Doha, Qatar.

There is room for more athletes as qualification period enters the second month in a campaign to raise more numbers.

According to the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) publicity secretary, Namayo Mawerere, more athletes have the chance to make the grade at the fourth UAF National Track and Field competition which is slated for Saturday, April 13 at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.

The qualifying window for the World Championships in Doha runs from March 7, 2018, to September 6, 2019, for the 10,000m, marathon and relays (4 x 100m/4 x 400m). For all other events on track, the window goes from September 7, 2018, to September 6, 2019.

Namayo Mawerere,

The competition also targets qualifiers for the All Africa Games due in Morocco on August 20, 2019.

However, the recent concluded World Cross Country Championships came along with more good tidings with nine of the Ugandan runners in the senior men and women category earning IAAF automatic qualification to the World Championships

The international Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) approved in December 2018 that the top 15 finishers at the 2019 World Cross Country Championships are considered to have achieved the entry standard in the 10,000 meters for the World Championships.

Consequently, the nine Ugandan runners led by Golden boy Joshua Cheptegei who finished among the top 15 in Aarhus World Cross Country in Aarhus, Denmark two weeks ago are covered by the qualification system.

The list also has women athletes as; Rachael Zena Chebet who finished 4th, Peruth Chemutai 5th, Juliet Chekwel 13th and Esther Chebet 14th while the men – Jacob Kiplimo 2nd, Thomas Ayeko 7th, Joel Ayeko 10th and Albert Chemutai 12th.
