AFCON U-17 (Group A): Wednesday, 17th April 2019
Tanzania Vs Uganda
Nigeria Vs Angola
Two wounded sides at the on-going AFCON U-17 finals in Tanzania face off in group A on Wednesday.
Uganda (The Cubs) face off against the hosts Tanzania in the two countries respective second matches.
The Cubs not only narrowly lost 1-0 to Southern African country Angola, but also, finished the game with 10 men following a red card to left back Ibrahim Juma in the closing moments of the game.
Osvaldo Pedro Capemba netted the lone strike of the game, coming in the 33rd minute off a heavy deflection from Uganda’s defender Samson Kasozi.
Therefore, head coach Samuel Paa Kwesi and the rest of the technical team will be expected to name Juma’s replacement as well as call for a couple of other changes up front.
Isma Mugulusi and Thomas Kakaire who were introduced in the second half and had an impact are thus expected to be given a run in earlier on against Tanzania.
Goalkeeper Jack Komakech, who was alert and looked impressive in between the goal posts will be expected to maintain his slot, as with team captain Gavin Kizito Mugweri and Kasozi at the heart of the defence.
Victory for either side will inspire them and recover from the opening day blushes.
Defeat on the other side will thus condemn the country in question with early elimination out of the tournament.
In the other game, either Angola or Nigeria has a chance to seal a slot to Brazil for the FIFA U-17 tournament with a victory.
Nigeria humbled hosts Tanzania 5-4 in an interesting and epic opener that produced a total of 9 goals.
Wisdom Onyedikachi Ubani (brace), Alfred Olatomi Olaniyan, Akinkunmi Ayobami Amoo and Ibraheem Olalekan Jabaar netted the goals for Nigeria.
Edmund John Godfrey scored twice for Tanzania, with the other two goals coming from Pius John Kelvin and Suleman Swaibu’s own goal.
This is the first time that the CECAFA region is hosting the championship.
