Masindi based outfit Lady Doves won their first championship this season after triumphing at the Maama Becca Memorial Cup.
Lady Doves edged Uganda Martyrs High School Lubaga in the clubs category to become winners in the final played at Old Kampala Primary School on Saturday.
Normal time ended goalless but Lady Doves won 5-4 in the penalty shootout.
Coach Oliver Mbekeka believes this will help the team gain more confidence as they remain focused to compete both in the FUFA Women Elite League and the FUFA Women’s Cup.
“It is important that we won this tournament because we are still focused at competing for the other championships as well.”
In the secondary schools’ category, Mukono High School defeated national champions Gaddafi Integrated Academy to emerge champions.
Elizabeth Nakigozi scored the lone goal of the game to guide Mukono High to victory.
Habanom Primary School overcame Main Street Primary School Jinja to successfully defend their title in the primary schools category.
Normal time ended in a one-all draw but Habanom won the penalty shootout 4-3.
The guest of honour at the final, Florence Bagunywa Nkalubo cautioned players to remain disciplined and keep in school.
“Being talented is good but if you remain disciplined and keep in school, you’ll have a bright career.”
The tournament is played in memory of staunch football fan Rebecca Namalyo Kazibwe popularly known as Maama Becca.
She was a vocal fan who supported Express FC but is also credited for starting Women’s football in Uganda in the 1990s.
Kazibwe passed on in 2008 and this tournament was started in memory of her great contribution towards developing women’s football.
