The games between UCU Canons and City Oilers have, more often than not, been explosive since Oilers joined the National Basketball League in 2013.

And on Sunday afternoon, Canons put up arguably their best performance of the season thus far handing Oilers their first defeat of the season.

UCU defeated Oilers, 90-82, in double overtime at YMCA behind David Deng’s season-high 37 points.

Deng opened the game from downtown on his way to a 14-point first quarter that ended tied at 19-all.

City Oilers edged the second quarter 20-13 but the Canons never fell far behind behind the rest of the way keeping City Oilers within arms distance.

The fourth quarter was equally close with Deng never letting Oilers go on a run and Canons went up with just over 3 minutes to play in the fourth quarter. Oilers played catch up that even when Deng hit a huge three, Drileba responded to force overtime.

Joas Maheta (11 points) connected from 3-point range to start the overtime and Drileba (10 points) answered in equal measure at the other end. Both teams shot poorly in the period and despite Landry Ndikumana (22 points)putting Oilers in the lead Isaiah Ater (20 points) was sent to the line and hit the two throws to take the game into double overtime.

In the second overtime, Canons shot 4-of-6 from the line before Fayed Bbaale iced the game with a 3.

UCU Canons return to action on Wednesday, May 8 to take on Power while City Oilers face Warriors two days later.
