- Mali 112-32 Rwanda
- Egypt 88-42 Tanzania
- Uganda 69-73 Mozambique (OT)
Uganda exited the 2019 FIBA U16 Women’s African Championship after falling to Mozambique 73-69 on Thursday night.
The quarterfinal tie at Amahoro Stadium was decided in overtime after the Junior Gazelles failed to defend their six-point lead in the final 14 seconds of regulation.
Unlike the group games in which Uganda was blown out by halftime, the Junior Gazelles controlled the first half having limited their opponents to 16 points as they scored 28.
However, a third-quarter collapse put Mozambique back in the contest as they outscored the Ugandans 25-12.
The Junior Gazelles controlled the better part of the final quarter and had a six-point lead with just under fifteen seconds to play. With Uganda leading 60-57, Joy Nyapenda turned over and fouled Paula Mabjaia from three-point range and Mabjaia hit one of the three throws before Shannel Julio scored at the buzzer to send the game to overtime.
Despite Maria Najjuma’s huge game in which she poured in 33 points, pulled down 49 rebounds and blocked 13 shots, the Juniors Gazelles couldn’t last through overtime. Sylvia Namuddu (11 points) was the only other Ugandan to score in double figures.
Paula Mabjaia scored team-high 27 points to lead Mozambique while Leonor do Alvar and Vanessa Chivale contributed 13 points apiece.
The defeat means Uganda will face Rwanda in the sixth-place classification game on Saturday.
