Jinja Hippos Rugby Club head coach Robert Seguya has said that the injuries sustained by his players are not a worry to his team.
Seguya was speaking during a post-match interview after clinching a 24-03 win against Rhinos at the Dam Waters Rugby Grounds in Jinja City.
We are a very balanced team. I’m not scared about the injuries because first of all, they are not severe and secondly, the bench is as good as the starting lineup… it is a matter of choice. It is not a worry to the team.Robert Seguya, Jinja Hippos Head Coach
A number of Hippos players have sustained minor injuries and knocks from the build-up to the season and the games against Impis and Rhinos.
Case in point, star winger Denis Etwau, who was unavailable for the postponed season opener and game against Impis, made a return against Rhinos. Eliphaz Emong limped off with a minor ankle injury midway through the second half on Saturday but it was revealed that he should be fit and available for the next match.
The team have built squad depth within their ranks and from feeder club, Kiira Crocs. This suitably explains why Seguya is not worried about any injury scares in his camp. He is neither worried about a dip in quality from whichever player makes it onto the pitch.
On how Hippos managed to stay ahead despite being denied possession by the Rhinos pack, Seguya said that his boys played according to the game plan on defense.
“You may understand that this team is one, so the players believe in our structure and the game plan,” Seguya said.
This belief and patience materialized with the bonus point try scored by captain Maxwell Ebonga in the last play of the match.
Jinja Hippos travel to Kampala this weekend for the first time this season where they will play two back-to-back away games against Buffaloes and Warriors.
