Covid-19 effects have continued to take a toll on motorsports activities in the region.
The latest is the cancellation of Machakos rally; the second round of the Kenya National Rally Championship. The rally was due this Sunday in Machakos.
The cancellation follows Friday’s Covid-19 address by Kenya President Uhuru Kenyatta in which all sports activities in the country were suspended.
“The clerk of the course in consultation with the stewards has declared force majeure and consequently the event is cancelled,” reads the bulletin from the Machakos rally Clerk of the course; John Kamau.
There has been a huge increase in Covid-19 cases in the Kenyan capital Nairobi and neighboring counties.
There has also been a suspension of movements within the capital Nairobi and four other counties.
The temporary suspension of sports is a concern for rally enthusiasts with the highly anticipated WRC return in Kenya.
Kenya is on schedule to host the sixth round of the World Rally Championship from June 24-27; a return that will end its close to two decades off the world status.
Another event in suspense is the Equator rally; a round of the Africa Rally Championship due on 24-25th April in Naivasha.
It’s not clear yet when the government will lift the suspension on sports activities.
