Denis Etwau

Jinja Hippos Rugby Club head coach Robert Seguya has backed Denis Etwau after the speedster struggled for form in his second game of the season on Saturday.

Etwau made his first appearance at home against Rhinos during matchday three and was out on the park the following weekend against Buffaloes at Kyadondo. Both appearances were characterized by handling errors that were uncharacteristic of the lethal finisher.

Coach Seguya has said that Etwau needs more game time to return to top form as he recovers from an injury.

Denis Etwau is recovering from an injury, so I should try to give him more game time. But I know he will back on form.

At the premature conclusion of last season, Etwau was Jinja Hippos’ top try scorer with 5 tries. This eye for the try line is what the Hippos are currently missing, as they rely on captain Maxwell Ebonga who has scored 5 tries already.

Seguya rued costly mistakes and lack of concentration by his players for the 06-03 loss against Buffaloes. Numerous try-scoring chances especially early in the first half went begging as Hippos could not successfully breach the Buffaloes defense.

“To me, it (the loss) is a bad feeling because we had about 7 to 8 opportunities to score tries and we would have finished the game in the first half. Mistakes from players and lack of concentration… seemingly the same that happened in the last game,” Seguya said.

The experienced coach acknowledged that they have a lot to work on in a short time but he remains optimistic that the target of finishing among the top four is still within reach.

Jinja Hippos return to action on Friday afternoon in the rescheduled match against Warriors at Kyadondo Rugby Club.
