• African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2022 | Group B
  • Democratic Republic of Congo vs Uganda
  • Stadium 19th May 1956
  • Saturday, 14th January 2023
  • Kickoff: 7PM(EAT)

Uganda Cranes will be fighting against bad history as they kick start their appearance at the 2022 edition in Algeria against the Democratic Republic of Congo on Saturday.

Despite qualifying six successive times for the biennial Championship, Uganda can only account for one win and this came in 2014 against Burkina Faso.

Therefore, Saturday’s encounter with the Democratic Republic of Congo at Stadium 19th May 1956 will be a platform to end the poor streak.

Coach Milutin Sredojevic aka Micho is aware of the poor performance in the past but he believes this time round, the team is in the best state to break this hurdle.

“After three weeks of preparations for CHAN, the time has finally come to serve what we have been cooking. We are in the best state to go and fight, compete and deliver good results. History in this competition is not good but this group of players is here to right the wrongs,” he said.

Micho is also aware of the importance of winning the first game in the Group indicating it builds confidence in the team.

“Unlike teams like Argentina that have the mental fortitude to lose the first game and go on to win Championships, it is always important to get a good result in the first game because it gives you confidence. Our target is to do well in the first game and start the tournament on a high.”

Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo have not met at CHAN before but the recent engagement between the two sides saw the former win 2-0 at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

The other Group B game will be between Senegal and Ivory Coast.
