The tenure of office for Uganda Golf Club (UGC) Lady Captain Grace Kabonero officially came to an end on Saturday, 18th March 2023 as Wendy Angudeyo and company took over.

It was a perfect signing out with a well-organized and attended tournament at the par-72 golf facility in Kampala.

Samson Akankiza (men), Edrae Kagombe (ladies), Tadeo Rodell Gaita Kisembo (professionals), Henry Saleh and Milly Mbabazi (caddies) emerged as the outstanding golfers during a championship that had as many as 200 golfers.

This is exciting to win on the day the UGC Lady Captain is completing her term of office. I am humbled. I played a simple game throughout the 18 holes with a biride on hole 17 that lit up my performance. Grace (Kabonero) is my good friend and happy for her service to the game of golf.

My round was good. I never expected to beat everybody else. This is infact my best score since I started playing golf in 2021. I am humbled.

Kabonero handed over prizes and gifts of appreciation to the different parties; Uganda Golf Union, Uganda Ladies Golf Union, UGC staf outstanding golfers, guests, caddies, sponsors and partners.

Akankiza scored 65 nett, Kagombe had 68 nett and Gaita registered 5-under 67 (gross).

Other Group winners:

In group B, Jackie Kamunyu (72 nett), Peace Muyege (74 nett) and Ruth Ssali (75 nett) stood out.

Connie Nshemereirwe (74 nett), Connie Mukuru (75 nett) and Lira Grace Obua (75 nett) were outstanding in group C.

Eva Magala clinched the 2023 club championship, beating Gloria Mbaguta 6/5 over 36 holes as well as the nearest to the pin prize.

Mukuru beat Diana Nabukenya in sudden-death play-off to triumph in the Kitante cup.

The best caddies were Henry Saleh (74 Nett) for the males and Milly Mbabazi (84 Gross) for the females.

Side-Bets:

The longest drive contest was won by Joseph Cwinya-ai (male) and Martha Babirye (ladies) on par-5-hole 18.

Ram Shaban (male) and Eva Magala (ladies) toppled the rest in the nearest to the pin on par-3-hole 11.

Without their generous contribution, this tournament would not have been successful. During my term, we have registered a growth of 36 new lady members and more are still coming. Many of these young ladies will continue to grow the ladies section.” Kabonero revealed.

In her tenure of office, the Lady Captain has fronted the training of young golfers especially during holidays with the help of senior golfers and professionals.

The golden are of ladies and seniors were also lauded in a special way.

Professional Gaita won the paid-ranks cluster with 5-under 67 to fetch the biggest fraction of UGX 5,000,000 kitty.

The two lady professionals; Flavia Namakula and Irene Nakalembe shared UGX 2,000,000 apiece.

New team in place:

Wendy Angu’deyo is the new UGC Lady Captain. She will be deputized by Eva Araduha.

Rosette Tugume is the Honorary secretary and Bernedette Musanabera is Honorary Treasurer.
