Uganda 0-1 Tanzania

Uganda Cranes Afcon 2023 qualifying campaign has hit a rock again following a 1-0 defeat to Tanzania’s Taifa Stars away in Egypt.

Simon Msuva scored the winner in the second half to hand the Cranes the second defeat in the campaign after another 2-0 loss to Algeria on match day one.

In a game of minimal chances, Joseph Ochaya failed to tap home in the first half when presented with the opportunity at the far post while Jamal Salim was lucky not to concede from Dismass Novatus free kick which hit the upright and agonisingly went out.

Uganda made the first changes with Micho withdrawing Fahad Bayo, Farouk Miya and Siraje Sentamu for youngsters Richard Basangwa, Ismail Mugulusi and Steven Sserwadda.

Basangwa immediately won a corner with an attempt that Aishi Manula saved.

However, Sserwadda was forced out a few moments later and replaced by Allan Okello.

But the Taifa Stars defended resolutely even attacked and had chances of their own.

In the 69th minute, a well worked move from the defence saw Dickson Job cross lowly into the area and Msuva from near post slotted home to give the Taifa Stars a lead that they held on.

Defeat leaves Uganda at the bottom of group F with one point after three games and must now beat Tanzania in the reverse fixture on Tuesday to stay with any hopes of playing in the final tournament.

Tanzania are now second with four points, two ahead of second placed Niger who lost 2-1 to Algeria on Thursday.
