Uganda Men’s 7s have become known as the team that will celebrate every win, big or small, with the same high level of excitement.
And at the 2023 Safari 7s this weekend, they stayed on script after winning the bronze medal match.
Coach Tolbert Onyango’s charges recorded their first historic mark by beating Tropic 7s by 33-07 points. This would be the first time Uganda featured in the Safari 7s Cup Semifinals since inception in 1996. Before then, the highest Uganda had ever ranked was fifth place (Plate final winner) in 1999, 2006, and 2021.
Agonisingly, they lost the semifinal match to Samurai by 21-19 through a try scored in the very last play of the match.
But this did not stop them from creating more history with victory in the subsequent bronze medal match. The 31-07 result against Germany also continued Uganda’s run of positive results against their long-time rivals.

On the other hand, Uganda Women made even bigger history when they beat defending champions Kenya Lionesses to win the 2023 women’s title.
