Ceylon Lions got off a flying starting with a nine-wicket victory over the newly promoted Tornado Bee at the Lugogo Cricket Oval.
Recruit Siraje Nsubuga was the star of the match with the ball, picking up 6/20 as Tornado Bee dropped from 61/3 to be bowled out for 78 inside 27 overs.
Martin Ondeko (19) and Brighton Muganzi (22) knocked off the requirement inside 14 overs to give the Ceylon Lions a great start to their season.
The Kamengo-based side has come close a couple of times in the past but the might of Aziz Damani has denied them the holy grail and now with Damani out of the league there is an opportunity for everyone to get their hands on the trophy.
Wanderers failed to get past Nyakasura. The new faces of the Wanderers including Suleiman Sharif, Mohammad Shaaf, Geoffrey Kakaire, and Timothy Kawanguzi featured in this encounter but were unable to inspire their new side to victory.
Wanderers batted first but only managed 148 with Abu Sseguya the top scorer with 47. In reply, Nyakasura never had it easy as they kept losing wickets as they made a charge for the total.
In the end, the runs set by Wanderers were not enough even when they managed to take the game very deep. Nyakasura avenged last season’s opening-day defeat with a two-wicket win.
In the only Division 2 action this weekend, Avengers got maximum points in the doubleheader game at Budo.
U-19 youngster Christopher Kidega was the star of the show as he was dominant with bat in both run chases to ensure that they leave Budo as the victors.
Avengers dropped down last season and they will be seeking a quick return to the top flight.
