Kutchi Tigers won their first game of the season against Patidar by 32 runs at the lakeside oval in Entebbe.

In a very wide-open Division 1 championship that is missing Aziz Damani – winners for the previous five years, Kutchi who finished in third place behind the now non-existent Damani sides have laid down their championship ambitions with a routine win.

Kutchi Tigers, Ceylon Lions and Nyakasura are the only sides to win so far in a top-flight that has only six teams after Aziz Damani (3 teams) and Challengers opted out of the 2024 season.

In the second division, Soroti City were the only winners. The side from Eastern Uganda won all its games this weekend to put them in a good place for promotion.

They blew away the students of Kings College Budo in the Saturday encounters. The morning game was affected by rain but Soroti City came out on top in the short game. In the afternoon, the hosts, Budo, fought gallantly but ran out of resources with six runs still required for the victory and the travellers collected all winning points at the Budo Oval.

On Sunday, the unbeaten sides met. Both sides had picked maximum winning points from Budo but the overnight rains couldn’t allow the morning game due to a wet outfield.

In the afternoon, Soroti City dug deep to pick up the win against a fancied Avengers side.

Avengers were slight favourites in this one but failed to kick on and the loss sets them back in their quest for immediate promotion.

Soroti collected at least 7 points out of a possible 8 points from the weekend and that sets them up for promotion in a one-round league format.

The top two sides in Division 2 will gain promotion to the top flight. The Division 2 sides play double-header T20 games every weekend and the teams will only play a one-round league this year.
