Husina Kobugabe and Gladys Mbabazi etched their names in the books of history on Sunday after clinching gold in the badminton Women’s doubles at the ongoing African Games in Accra, Ghana.
To win the coveted prize, Kobugabe and Mbabazi defeated Algerian duo of Halla Bouksani and Tanina Violette Mammeri at Borteyman Sports Complex.
Kobugabe and Mbabazi become the first Ugandans to win Gold in badminton for Uganda at the African Games (formerly known as All Africa Games).
It was also Uganda’s first gold at the 2023 African Games edition.

The first set was close but Uganda edged it 23-21 before securing victory in the second set which they won 21-14.
The pair join Fadilah Shamika Mohamed, Edwin Ekiring, Gladys Mbabazi (second time) and Aisha Nakiyemba as Ugandans that have won medals in badminton at the African Games.
Shamika won bronze in the women’s singles at this year’s event for reaching the semifinals where she lost to eventual winner Scholtz.
Ekiring won silver at the African Games 2011 in Maputo but also won bronze at the 2007 Algiers and 2015 Brazaville Games.
In the 2019 Rabat Games, Aisha Nakiyemba and Gladys Mbabazi won bronze in the Women’s doubles.
