- City Oilers 78–73 Namuwongo Blazers
City Oilers took a crucial 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven National Basketball League playoff finals with a hard-fought 78-73 victory over the Namuwongo Blazers at a packed Lugogo Indoor Arena on Sunday evening.
Responding like true record champions after relinquishing their series lead in Game 4, the Oilers brought high defensive intensity and effectively neutralised the Blazers’ transition attack, outscoring them 22-10 in fast-break points.
The action was intense right from the opening tip. Titus Lual got the Oilers on the board first with a quick layup, but Kasereka Tembo responded immediately with a tough finish inside for the Blazers.
Namuwongo held the upper hand through the opening frame, capped off by an Edgar Munaba driving layup to send the Blazers into the second quarter holding a 23-19 advantage.
The Oilers mounted their comeback in the second period. A quick layup from Joel Kayira followed by a Fayed Baale three-pointer sparked a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to a single point.
City Oilers continued to push the tempo and managed to edge ahead, taking a tight one-point lead into the halftime break.
Both teams returned from the locker rooms fully locked in, turning the third quarter into a physical, defensive battle. Players threw their bodies on the line for every loose ball, but neither side could break away.
Tonny Drileba eventually sliced through the Blazers’ defence to sink a driving layup, locking the contest at 58-58 heading into the final frame.
With the game on the line in the fourth quarter, veteran point guard Patrick Rembert took complete control. Rembert executed masterclass game management, running down the clock, dictating the tempo, and delivering clutch scoring whenever the Oilers needed a bucket.
Rembert finished with a game-high 28 points, backed by double-digit efforts from Joel Lukoji with 14 points and Titus Lual with 10.
Despite the loss, the Blazers put up a fierce fight. Arthur Wanyoto paced Namuwongo with 15 points, while big man Anthony Chukurah delivered a strong interior performance, recording a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
However, Rembert’s late-game heroics proved to be the difference as City Oilers moved to within one victory of retaining their national championship.
