Uganda U20 Men’s National Team continued to shine brightly at the ongoing African Games in Accra, Ghana after edging South Sudan in the final group game on Friday.
The Uganda Hippos had already secured top spot in Group B after defeating Nigeria and Senegal but still ensured they ended the group on a high, winning 1-0 against neighbours South Sudan.
In the game played at University of Ghana Stadium, defender Apollo Kagogwe scored the lone goal of the game in the second half.
The natural centre back who was deployed as a right back saw his ferocious strike in the 74th minute find the back of the net.
Kagogwe was one of the several changes that coach Morley Byekwaso made from the team that had played Senegal.
Haruna Lukwago, Ibrahim Juma, Ronald Madoi, Ivan Irinimbabazi, Abasi Kyeyune, Bruno Bunyaga and Patrick Jonah Kakande were all rested.
The changes meant that fringe players such as Shafiq Magogo, Alpha Thiery Ssali, Enock Luyima, Innocent Kisolo, Hakim Mutebi and Kagogwe all got the chance to start.
Uganda will face Democratic Republic of Congo in the semifinals on Tuesday while hosts Ghana who finished top in Group A will take on Senegal.
