African Games: Uganda v Ghana

  • Uganda 194/5
  • Ghana 73 all out
  • Uganda won by 121 runs

Cricket Cranes barely broke a sweat as they matched to a 121-run win against African Games hosts Ghana.

Uganda won the toss and elected to bat first and the opening combination of Simon Ssesazi (90) and Roger Mukasa (69) put on a stand of 160 to set the tone for the game.

Uganda finished on 194/5 in their 20 overs. Mukasa knocked his second half century of the tournament to follow up his 54 in the win over Kenya on the opening day.

In reply, there was no getting out of the blocks for Ghana as Alpesh Ramjani had a miserly spell of four overs giving away just six runs and picking two wins. He got good support from Henry Ssenyondo (2/18) with Juma Miyiga (3/10) ripping through the tail to clean up Ghana for just 73 inside 16 overs.

The win puts Uganda on top of Group A with two wins but will need a win on the final day of the group games to be certain of top place.

Kenya defeated South Africa by 70 runs in the other game in the group.

The win for Kenya means they South Africa will need to defeat Uganda on the final day to progress via Net Run Rate while Kenya will need a win against Ghana and hope that Uganda can do them a favour by defeating South Africa to ensure their progression to the semifinals.

Uganda will drop out of the top two if they lose badly against South Africa but with a superior Net Run Rate to their closet rivals and barring disaster they should at worst finish in second place.

The teams take a break tomorrow (Wednesday) with action to return on Wednesday for the final group games.

Denis has represented Uganda in international cricket events including the World Cup. He is currently the captain of Wanderers Cricket Club.
