Uganda U20 Men’s National Football Team forward Abasi Kyeyune has revealed that they did not lose hope even when they were trailing against Congo in the semifinals at the ongoing African Games 2023.

In the game played at Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday, Uganda trailed 2-0 at half time with Servyl Akaouala and Mignon Koto scoring a goal each for Congo in the first half but staged a second half comeback to win 4-2.

Kyeyune stated that they remained hopeful and only needed to restructure and play their best game in order to win.

“I think we had a slow start but we kept believing and hoping for a comeback. They (Congo) were really good but we had belief in ourselves and it was just a matter of re-organizng ourselves,” he said.

The winger also revealed that the coaches motivated them during the halftime break and returned for the second half with renewed energy.

“The coaches told us to keep the belief and motivated us during the half time interval. We knew the mistakes we had made in the first half and when we turned on our A-game, they could not stop us.” He stated.

Kyeyune scored the first goal for Uganda at the hour mark before making two assists moments later.

Bruno Bunyaga bagged a brace while substitute Hakim Mutebi put the icing on the cake with the fourth goal.

Uganda will face hosts Ghana in the final on Friday 22nd March 2024.

  1. See what local coaches are doing? FUFA needs to trust the local coaching staff more. Given them CHAN then AFCON. Support them on CAF club engagements. I know it’s easier to get a veteran coach and have them do some of the work for FUFA instead.

FUFA have been around the block enough to know how to run a winning campaign and fill in with support where a manager is wanting. So give our coaches a break and let them thrive at the top level.
