Uganda’s Victoria Pearls fell to Sri Lanka in their final game at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Global Qualifiers in Abu Dhabi by 67 runs.
In a Goliath versus David encounter, 7th-ranked Sri Lanka took no chances against 18th-ranked Uganda. Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first.
The pace off from the Ugandan bowlers especially Sarah Walaza troubled the openers and kept the run rate down inside the power play. However, once the Sri Lanka batters got stuck in, they started increasing the scoring rate with the wickets being picked by Janet Mbabazi (1/19) and Rita Musamali (1/32).
Sri Lanka finished on 154/4 in their 20 overs with some brave bowling and fielding making sure that the favourites don’t score big.
In the chase, Janet Mbabazi and Immaculate Nakisuyi opened the batting for Uganda with Proscovia Alako dropped down the order. Uganda got out of the blocks quickly but once Janet Mbabazi (14) was run out, the rest of the top and middle failed to hold for long. Only a brave knock from Proscovia Alako (36) rescued things for Uganda who could only manage 87 all out.
Uganda might have failed to chase down the total but a more brave batting show allowed them to compete against a strong opponent. Sri Lanka, a seasoned campaigner, was quick to admit that Uganda has the potential to do better than the results they have gotten in the tournament.
It was an average tournament for Victoria Pearls who picked up just one victory against the USA but failed against Thailand, Scotland and Sri Lanka.
