Uganda Cranes coach Morley Byekwaso want the Uganda Cranes to make history by reaching the quarter final of the Africa Nations Championship.

Despite featuring in all but one edition, Uganda has never got beyond the group stages but playing at home gives the players, coaches and every stakeholder belief the narrative can change.

Uganda is in the same group as Algeria who they play first, Guinea, Niger and South Africa.

“That first game is crucial,” said Byekwaso. “It’s not just about tactics; it’s about mindset. The players must realise the chance they have—not just to compete, but to inspire.”

“It’s time we stop being content with participation. We are building a team that believes in progression, not just presence.”

The tournament kicks off on August 2 in Dar es Salam but two days later, Uganda will get their campaign underway at Mandela National stadium, against Algeria.

It will also be the first time that Uganda is coached by local coaches but will be under the watchful eye of Paul Put, the national team coach.

A squad of 41 players is currently preparing but will be trimmed by next week.
