A former boxer, Balimwezo also played Lawn Tennis, football and was a runner in his hey days.

Nakawa East Member of Parliament Hon. Eng. Ronald Nsubuga Balimwezo is a shrewd, hands-on and vocal politician.

Balimwezo, a civil engineer by training never minces his words when it comes to affirmative action.

A former boxer, Balimwezo also played Lawn Tennis, football and was a runner in his hey days.

Given his sporting background, he agitates for many of the pro-sports programs and developments.

“It is time now that we stand up and protect the open spaces and sports grounds” Balimwezo echoed as he officiated at the awards presentation for the Fortbet Real Stars monthly awards at Lazio Restaurant in Kampala.

Also eyeing the Lord’s Mayor seat for Kampala City, Eng. Balimwezo boldly calls for a collective arm to protect the numerous sports fields.

“Many sports grounds in the cities are becoming extinct because of careless people who mind-less of sports development. We need to protect these grounds with one voice” Balimwezo added.

Balimwezo points to the vast land that housed the famous Lugogo sports park which has been reclaimed for industraization.

“Back in the days, Lugogo was all green with acres and acres of land designated for sports. Now, only a small fraction remains. We need to protect the existing land” he urges.

During the rewarding ceremony for the June 2025 best outstanding sports personalities, netball player Lindah Muzigo of Uganda Christian University Netball Club, Frank Nyembo Fataki (Sommert Basketball club player) and 3000m steeple chase runner Peruth Chemutai were awarded with plaques.

In the same vein, legendary golf professional Deo Akope, also the chairman Uganda Professional Golfers Association and a teaching pro & coach was rewarded with the life time achievement award.

Muzigo, a goal defender and goalkeeper was instrumental in two victories for UCU as they won 48-37 and 60-42 over UPDF and Busia respectively during the national league.

During the month, UCU Angels also lost 33-37 to record champions National Insurance Corporation (NIC).

To win this award, Muzigo edged teammate Alice Isoto and KCCA’s Shafie Nalwanja.

Sommet Basketball club player Nyembo was outstanding in their 92-73 win over KIU Titans, 85-81 victory against Kampala Rockets, 90-87 win over City Oilers and the 68-64 triumph against JKL Dolphins (men).

Despite a 55-52 loss to KCCA panthers Nyembo still managed to put a significant performance for the June award.

Out of the five games SOMMET Basketball Club played, Nyembo averaged 21 points, picking up a combined 57 rebounds and 26 turnovers to drive Sommet Basketball Club to a 6th place on the National Basketball log with 27 points in 17 games.

Steeple chase runner Peruth Chemutai emerged top in athletics.

Chemutai won a silver medal at Paris Diamond League in the 3000m steeplechase event with a seasonal best 8:54.41.

Kenya’s Faith Cherotich earned gold with a time of 8:53.37.

All top performers with the accolades

With three Uganda amateur open titles to his name (2000, 2001 and 2002), Akope was given the life time achievement award.

Akope also boasts of two Uganda open professional accolades, as well as multiple trophies.

He is the current chairman of the Uganda Professional Golfers Association (UPGA), a teaching Pro and the head coach of the Uganda Parliamentary Golf team.

Real Stars Executive Director Isaac Mukasa, Jude Colour Solutions’ Henry Zzimbe and Fortebet assistant laisons manager Resty Mbatidde Namugema all graced this event.

These awards have been held since 2018.
