Moses Magero Mwanje at Mandela National Stadium Namboole on duty during CHAN 2024 Tournament

Overview:

Magero was one of the 600 plus volunteers recruited by the CHAN 2024 / AFCON 2027 workforce and volunteering sub-committee.

The non-porous walls of Mandela National Stadium, Namboole echoed and re-echoed large decibels of sound during the CHAN Pamoja 2024 tournament in Uganda.

From the wild chanting of fans, vibrant chorusing songs of praise, adoration and boos; enticing music, the critiquing voices alike,  the bowl at this gigantic amenity has been a fiesta since 4th August 2025.

Perhaps one unique voice emitted aloud across the different stadium speakers belonged to the Director of Ceremony, Moses Magero Mwanje.

Magero orchestrated the microphone with the due attention and purpose it deserved throughout the different match days.

With sheer professionalism, confidence, cohesion, passion, energy, determination, vigour, zeal and enthusiasm, Magero far exceeded the limits beyond the bare minimum.

Magero was one of the 600-plus volunteers recruited by the CHAN 2024/ AFCON 2027 workforce and volunteering sub-committee.

“Welcome to Mandela National Stadium, Kampala for the TotalEnergies Championship of African Nations (CHAN) Pamoja 2024…” he recited the trademark opening catch phrase with a deep salutation as the crowd obliged.

Prior to the match day experience, Magero adequately prepared himself for a task many would envisage as “basic”.

Virtually, he has been smart for the job at hand, clad in a customary suit with clean vocal chords.

Magero acquitted himself with the right pronunciation of players’ and officials’ names from varying backgrounds across Africa.

“It has been a memorable experience,” Magero recollects of his time with the microphone at Namboole during the CHAN 2024 matches.

“I prepared myself well before every match. Such kind of work has no room for error, especially with the way names are pronounced,” he hinted.

For every match, there was a countdown that Magero respected to the dot.

From rehearsals several hours before the game to the pre-match customs and the duels proper, Magero commanded the microphone as though a free-falling object would adhere to gravitational pull.

“The rehearsals were very key and pertinent before every match day. These further necessitated my great flow, clarity and confidence,” Magero adds.

The communication expert read aloud line-ups for the teams in action, team and match officials, keenly followed the match proceedings, taking particular attention to the cards, team substitutions (changes), engaged the thousands of spectators and conveyed any other message to be communicated deemed necessary.

CHAN 2024 being a precursor to the AFCON 2027 championship in East Africa, Magero anticipates he will maintain the status quo and serve at such a prestigious continental tournament.

“I thank the Local Organizing Committee for the opportunity presented to serve at CHAN 2024. I look forward serving at AFCON 2027 and possibly the FIFA World Cup,” he adds.

Magero is an old student from two of Uganda’s prestigious educational institutions: St Mary’s College Kisubi and the mighty Makerere University.

He is also the Public Relations and Communications manager at Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Football Club, where he has served since 2016.

David Isabirye is a senior staff writer for Kawowo Sports where he covers most of the major events.
