Derrick Ndahiro scored an own goal that decided the game as Vipers lost 2-1 to visitors Power Dynamos at Kitende in the Caf Champions League.
Yunus Sentamu saw his early second half goal cancelled by Moses Shumah goal moments later and now the Venoms must beat their opponents in Kitwe to stand a chance of reaching the lucrative group stages.
Here is how the Venoms rated on the evening in a packed stadium.
Derrick Kiggundu – 4
Could have read the game better and left his line on goal number one and then takes full blame for failing on the cross that resulted into the Ndahiro’s own goal. Unconvincing on the day.
Ashraf Mandela – 6
Went forward well especially in the first half but his deliveries were lacking quality.
Derrick Ndahiro – 3
An evening to forget for the skilled left back who misplaced several passes, caught out of position on several occasions and unfortunately scored in his own net.
Kevin Dayslva – 5
Could have read the long ball better in the lead up to the equaliser. Takes a blame for letting Shumah run behind him.
Hilary Mukundane – 5
Went toe to toe with the big Kenyan striker Shumah and made some timely tackles to deny the Zambians. Consistently hoofed the ball to the attackers which played in hands of the opposing centre backs.
Taddeo Lwanga – 6
Left isolated often in the deeper role as Watambala preferred to play closer to the opponents’ box and Okello only good with possession. Outnumbered by the hard-working and dynamic Power Dynamos midfield.
Karim Watambala – 5
Not the kind of performance from the usually midfield gem that covers every blade of grass. Instead preferred to play closer to the opponents’ box instead of the box-to-box roles he is accustomed to.
Allan Okello -5
Won the freekick that resulted into Yunus Sentamu goal but struggled to influence the game in an attacking sense as he often preferred to fall deeper more often than hurting opponents closer to their box.
Milton Karisa -5
He looked miles away from his stratospheric levels especially in wide areas but a combination of positioning and form blunted his threat
Odili Chukwuma – 7
Vipers’ most dangerous attacker who kept the fans on tenterhooks especially in the first half when he took the game to Power Dynamos defenders. Tired legs in the second half and he was replaced by Usama.
Yunus Sentamu -6
Scored the goal to put the Venoms in the lead but should have opened the scores in the first half when put through on goal.
Substitutes
Usama Arafat -6
Tested the Power Dynamos goalie with a powerful free kick after coming on and his fleet left foot troubled the opponents when he came on.
Gusto Mulongo -5
Gave the Venoms another dimension in attack when he came on.
Enock Ssebagala – 5
Not much to improve the team’s fortunes after coming on.
Marvin Youngman -4
Didn’t do much to influence the game
