The Caf Confederation cup group stages kicked off with wins for CR Belouizdad, Wydad Casablanca and Stellenbosch but East African debutants Azam, Singinda and Nairobi United.
In Group A, Algeria’s USM Alger and Olympique de Safi earned slim but important 1-0 and 3-2 wins over Djoliba and San Pedro respectively.
Salaheddine Errahouli’s well-taken strike on 29 minutes gave the Moroccans a win on the roads.
For USM Alger, Goals from Houssem Ghacha, Adem Alilet and Saadi Radouani were enough to hold off the Ivorians, who replied through Dramane Kamagate and Mouhammadou Karamoko.
In Group B, Former African champions Wydad Casablanca crushed debutants Nairobi United 3–0 in Casablanca with goals from Ayoub Boucheta, Mohamed Bouchouari and Mohamed Rayhi.
AS Maniema Union of DR Congo earned a 2–0 victory over Azam FC in Kinshasa.
Christian Panzi opened the scoring, before sub Chadoma Ozome added a second late on.
In Group C, CR Belouizdad and South Africa’s Stellenbosch both started off with victories.
CR Belouizdad beat Khalid Aucho’s Singida Black Stars 2–0 with early goals from Belhocini and Benguit to go top of Group C on goal difference.
Stellenbosch, meanwhile, needed stoppage time to edge AS Otoho 1–0, with Angelo Cupido scoring in the 90+3 minute to secure a dramatic home win.
Lastly in group D, Al Masry defeated Kaizer Chiefs 2–1 in Port Said, with Bonheur Mugisha’s penalty and Mohamed Hashem’s late strike overcoming Dillon Solomons’ equaliser.
Zamalek were forced to settle for a 1–1 draw against ZESCO United in Ndola, leaving the Egyptians frustrated after failing to turn dominance into a decisive second goal.
